General FAQ

Can I stop by during the day to place an order?
We work by appointment only, so for all smaller orders we communicate by email. We do not have a storefront, therefore, cannot accept walk-ins. Appointments are typically reserved for orders with 200 or more servings and wedding cakes over 100 servings.

How far in advance should I contact you for my event?
We require at least 2 weeks notice for Custom Party Cakes, however, we recommend at least a 1-2 month notice on custom cakes as our schedule tends to fill up over 1 month in advance (earlier for busy summer months and holidays). Waiting too long will risk losing a spot on our calendar as we only take a small number of orders each week and orders are first come-first reserved.
Dessert Cakes require at least 5 days notice. For Cupcakes, Cookies, Breads, Desserts, & Party Favors, we recommend at least 5-7 days notice.
*Please note that we do NOT have any items on hand for same-day or next-day pick-up. We do not freeze items. We recommend visiting a storefront bakery for same-day or next-day pick-up.

What methods of payment do you accept? How do payments work?
We accept cash, checks and major credit cards. Personal checks are not accepted within 2 weeks of pick-up/delivery.
All regular orders under $100 are to be paid in full when order is placed. Orders over $100 require a deposit of $100 when order is placed and remainder of order paid 2 weeks before delivery/pick-up (or entire amount if less than 2 weeks prior). Payments can be made over the telephone, online, dropped into our Drop-Box outside, checks through the mail (if time allows), or in person during an appointment/consultation.
You may make a secure online payment by clicking on the link in your Invoice once you receive it. An updated invoice will be sent after making a payment. Please keep all receipts (updated invoices are also receipts) you receive from Storybook Bakery, whether from in person, through the mail or through email. Wedding cake payments require different payment plan and can be found in Wedding Cake FAQ section below.

Do you offer any discounts?
For your first order, we offer a Newbie Discount of 5% off entire order. You must ask for this discount to receive it. Limited to one discount per household.
We also have a military discount of 10% off entire order with military or dependent ID.

Do you have a portfolio of desserts and cakes you have done?
Due to the time constraint of a consultation and no walk-ins, we post pictures in our photo gallery and Facebook page for you to look at prior to a consultation and is available online 24/7. We look forward to expanding our portfolio with your fabulous cake!

Do you offer cake tastings? Sit-down consultations?
We offer sit-down consultations and tastings for general orders over 200 servings and wedding cake orders over 100 servings. If your order is for less than the minimum servings, you may purchase a sample cake or 1 dozen cupcakes before making your decision to place your order. Sample cakes and 1 dozen cupcakes cost $30 each, and include no decorations. If your order is for more than required servings, you may contact us to set up a consultation and purchase a tasting at your convenience. You can find information about wedding cake tastings below in Wedding Specific FAQs below.

Wedding Specific FAQ

What can I expect at my consultation?
A consultation is a chance for you to get to know your baker and what they can offer. This is also the time to discuss any ideas, flavors, colors, designs, etc. that you have in regards to your cake. Like with other wedding vendors, this is your chance to find someone that you are comfortable working with. If you request a tasting, this will be done first. Afterwards, we will discuss your cake and you will receive a price estimate that is good for 2 weeks. Finally, we will go over the wedding cake contract so you will know what to expect from us and what your responsibilities will be if you choose to book with us. The consultation will typically last about 1 - 1 1/2 hours.

How far ahead of time should I book my wedding cake?
As soon as you have decided the date of your wedding, you can reserve the date with us. We will need to know the number of guests/servings to be able to determine a price. If your wedding is during a summer or peak month, the sooner the better. We only take TWO wedding cake orders each week and during peak months our calendars can fill quickly, sometimes over 6 months in advance. Check our availability calendar, for availability. Dates showing “Wedding Orders FULL” on the calendar are dates where we already have our maximum 2 orders on the schedule and the date is closed to other wedding orders with 100+ servings. We will still take smaller wedding & party cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and desserts on most of those dates.

What do I need to bring to my wedding cake consultation?
Try to bring this basic information: reception venue name and phone number, wedding and reception date and time, and number of invited guests. Also any ideas you have, pictures, fabric swatches (especially if cake is to match wedding colors), wedding invitations, and anything else that would relate to your design.

How much do your wedding cakes cost? How are payments scheduled?
Wedding cakes are priced per serving (per person), and start at $3.50 for buttercream and $4.00 for fondant covered cakes. This means that a cake to feed 100 people, which is the minimum servings for wedding cakes, would start at $350 for buttercream and $400 for fondant. Complicated, intricate and fondant-heavy designs will add to the price per serving. Gumpaste flowers, figures, etc. are priced separately.
A $50.00 supplies deposit is required on all stacked cakes, those that involve construction and/or use support materials. It is refundable upon return of all supplies within 3 days. Cake stands are available for rent.
A 50% non-refundable retainer fee and signed contract are required to reserve your order in our calendar. Remainder of payment is due 3 weeks before wedding. We accept cash, checks and major credit cards. Payments can be made in person, online via a link on your Invoice, over the telephone (for credit cards) and through the mail. A copy of your invoice will be emailed to you and an updated invoice will be sent after making a payment. Please keep all receipts (updated invoices are also receipts) you receive from Storybook Bakery, whether from in person, through the mail or email.

When are you available for consultations? Are tastings required?
A sit-down consultation is required for all wedding cake orders over 100 servings. Consultation availability depends largely on our weekly schedule, which is limited. Therefore, we are usually only available for weekday appointments. For this reason, we offer Wedding Weekends each quarter to accommodate more couples (see next question for more information).
Tastings are not required to place a wedding cake order. A maximum of 4 people, including bride and groom may attend the consultation. During the tasting you will get to try a variety of cake flavors, our delicious buttercream frosting and a taste of fondant (optional). Your tasting is done at the beginning of your consultation. The price is $25.00, nonrefundable, and is paid in advance by use of credit card over the phone or through Paypal.

What is a Wedding Weekend?
Wedding Weekends are an entire weekend of back-to-back consultations with a FREE tasting. Consultation times are first-come first-reserved and 4 person maximum (including bride & groom) still apply. This is a chance to try our cakes and meet the owner/cake designer to discuss options for your cake. They are held several times throughout the year, especially in early spring and late fall/winter. Tasting Fee is waived for Wedding Weekends ONLY. Wedding Weekends have been extremely popular and are often filled quickly, especially on Saturday dates. A wait list is available once dates are filled.
If you are unavailable to attend the Wedding Weekend dates or wish to hold your consultation sooner (i.e. your wedding date is in the near future), separate consultations are still available during the week and some weekends. $25 Tasting Fee will apply to separate consultations.
Don't forget to check the calendar & Facebook page for upcoming bridal shows we are attending in the area, which are another great way to meet us and try our cakes!

Why do you charge a Tasting Fee when some others bakers offer it for free?
Quality is of utmost importance to us at Storybook Bakery. This is why we bake from scratch and do not cut corners, always using real fruit and fresh ingredients. For this reason, we absolutely will not freeze samples to provide for free tastings. Your tasting samples will be baked fresh for your consultation, just the same way that your wedding cake will be baked fresh for your wedding. Why would we bake a fresh delicious cake for your wedding, but serve you frozen cake for your tasting? We don't think it makes sense either, which is why we have chosen to bake fresh, which does require time and ingredient cost. If you are able, we recommend attending one of our Wedding Weekends, in which the Tasting Fee is waived.

What is a Groom’s Cake?
The Groom’s Cake is a Southern tradition that has recently spread to other parts of the country. In the past, the cake, usually in chocolate, was not served at the reception. Instead, it was cut up and boxed so that guests could take it home. Legend says, if an unmarried woman or girl puts the slice of cake under her pillow, she will dream of the man she will marry. These days, the Groom’s Cake is usually served at the rehearsal dinner or alongside the wedding cake at the reception. It is often the bride's wedding gift to the groom and decorated to illustrate the groom’s interest or hobbies.
